Beware the “Video Company” which AVOIDS Showing You Video!

It has become overly apparent this past year that there is a saturation of amateurs in the Cleveland wedding videography and photography market.

Inexperienced, unemployed, uninsured, tax-evading individuals are purchasing cookie-cutter websites and “setting-up shop” as “video companies”. Many photographers too, in feeling the economic pressure of lowered margins in their industry, have also “added-on” video as a potential upsell. Many of them have never produced a wedding video, and are “hoping for the best”.

After running in to many of these newbies at the recent Today’s Bride bridal show, and hearing some very bad things from recent clients we’ve met with, we decided to check some of them out.

Wow! The majority of the websites we visited are photography websites from a company called BluDomain which sells pre-fabricated photography websites for a few hundred dollars, complete with very nice images from professional photographers. They are marketed, sold, and installed to individuals with little or no computer/web/graphic design experience.

When one purchases a website from this company, it is assumed that the buyer will substitute his/her own photographic or video images in to the programming. Most of companies haven’t even changed the stock images and are using the work of other, professional photographers! Wow, again… What a way to try to fool an unsuspecting potential client.

When it comes to video, most of these sites have zero or very limited online video clips available on their websites. Why is that?!?!?! What do they have to hide? Are they ashamed of their work? The stories we’ve heard of BAD, shaky, dark, poorly-edited video leads us to believe the answer is YES!

If there is no video on the website, the reason is either: 1) the quality of the videos they have actually produced is terrible or they are afraid to show it (hoping that you can be seduced by price alone), or 2) they are trying to “break-in” to the business and have never shot an actual wedding. Therefore there is nothing to show. BAD either way!

Individuals with little to no experience in either shooting or editing weddings are not familiar with the informal “happenings” or formal traditions which occur on the wedding day. Only experience, and a keen “second sense” guides the professional to know exactly what to shoot, and how and when to shoot it.

Additionally, truly professional videography has an expensive entry-point. So, new individuals often work with inexpensive, consumer-grade equipment which produces an inferior image. They often edit with software which is already included with their computer, which severely limits the look and quality of the final video.

These jokers are also the same people which are subcontracted by many photographers who sell video as an “add-on” to their photography services.

The end result is a jittery, odd colored, poor sounding, difficult to watch video. Of course they wouldn’t display that type of “train wreck” on their website, and they hope you buy on price alone.

Even worse… If a website has only one or two clips and those are of marginal or terrible quality. One might ask, “Is this the best work they have to offer, and am I expected to PAY for this?”

The bottom line is: Very few to no video clips online = HIDING DISASTER & INEXPERIENCE!

Lana’s advice: It’s alright to be skeptical. If you are interviewing a potential videographer (or photographer for that matter), ask how many weddings they’ve shot and make sure you are viewing their actual work.

Do you really want to be this “Professional’s” practice wedding.

Our plug: The www.mystic-image.com website has over 100 GREAT video clips from different weddings. You can “shop online” and check us out.

National Photo, Video and DJ Chains = Unhappy Subcontractors = Disappointed Brides.

Reality Check #1:

Note: I was urged to write this article to benefit consumers after discussing similar experiences with several other Photographers, Videographers, and DJs. The catalyst was seeing one of our clients, who used a National Chain photographer, burst in to tears when we asked her about her photos. I hope you find it imformative.

Brides-to-be often utilize the web to glean unique ideas, research wedding vendors and make informed decisions concerning one’s wedding. That’s great – utilizing the marvels of modern technology lead to more creative ideas and aid in the perfect vendor selection process.

Since potential clients shop on the web, a business opportunity has led to the formation of companies who market nationally. Several of these chains are now paying Google’s Ad Words to obtain a top position listing for many “Cleveland Wedding” related search terms so you are likely to click on their site at some point in your wedding planning.

Companies, such as “The Pros” or “Bella Pictures”, offer multiple wedding services such as Photography, Videography, and DJ Entertainment and offering a discounted, “cheap” price.

“The Pros” state on their website that they are “Cleveland’s most recommended photography, video and disc jockey service”. Who is recommending them? I assure you that no reputable vendor in Cleveland is recommending this company – let me tell you why. They have a terrible reputation in the industry for doing a poor job, or not showing up at all.

When researching vendors, be sure to do your due diligence and search the web for reviews of any company you are thinking about hiring. Here’s one on “The Pros”:

http://www.bargaineering.com/articles/the-pros-wedding-services-not-reliable.html

These national companies will take your money and then call local companies and individuals in an attempt to “cover” your wedding. Often, the week before your wedding, these companies are frantically calling around to see who might be available to cover your once-in-a-lifetime event. Companies like these have called our company many times over the years. Our response is that we would never work for them and that they should operate as they do, because they provide low quality work and “cheapen” the reputation of an entire industry.

In fact, local Photographer and Videographer associations’ members have now banded together to boycott doing any sub-contracted work for these national companies.

If Professional Photographers, Videographers and Entertainers are not working for these companies, one might naturally question, “Who might be at my wedding?”

These companies tell you that they have a network of qualified local individuals. THEY DON’T. They might have the phone numbers of some amateurs who will be willing to work for a wage far below the industry average. The last Photographer we worked with was earning $10/hour. Individuals with vested interest in a company will do a better job. Want proof?

Bella Pictures home office is in CA. They have 30+ BBB complaints on record. 30 on record? How many total brides were disappointed? Check here for report:

http://www.bbb.org/greater-san-francisco/business-reviews/photographers/bella-pictures-in-san-francisco-ca-124072

Note: Bella is “BBB Accredited”. All this means is that a business must simply pay the BBB $400 per year for the rights to use the BBB logo. The badge has nothing to do with the reliability of a company.

Here’s our personal experience: We were hired to produce a wedding video for a couple in July 2009. They hired Bella Photography for their pictures. The photographer arrived at the house as the groom was about to enter the limousine on the way to the church. They did not respect the rules of the ceremony location (Roman Catholic Church) and were reprimanded by the Celebrant after the service. They dressed inappropriately and stood directly in front of the couple during the vows and blocked the view of the guests, and our video cameras. At the reception, they refused to stay a couple of minutes past their scheduled end time (9PM) in order to accommodate for, and photograph the bouquet toss, which was coming up “after this song”.

See this blog post from Scott E. Jones, the DJ from Jerry Bruno Entertainment who was on duty that night: http://djscottejones.blogspot.com/2009/07/oh-bella-where-art-thou-bella.html

When the bride picked-up her video, we asked her about the photos. She told us that she was very unhappy with the service provided and HATED her photos and didn’t plan on ordering any. ANY!

When you hire a national chain, you might feel as though you made a good choice because they are “BBB Accredited”, have a nice website, and offer a low price. The sad reality is that if you utilize one of these national chains for your Photography, Entertainment, or Videography services, the odds are that you WILL be disappointed.
You will be serviced by under-paid, ill-equipped, uncaring and inexperienced individuals who will do, at best, a marginal job.

Having been in the wedding business for over 20 years, my advice is to really do your homework. Check out potential vendors in person. Research them on the web. Check the www.BBB.org website to see if there might be problems.
Remember the old adages…

• If it seems to good to be true, it probably is.
• The lowest price is not always be the best option.
• And the biggest one of the all… You get what you pay for.

Caveat emptor! Buyer Beware! Do your homework!

Your Wedding vs. The Economy

Times are tough right now and saving money is what is on our minds all of the time. How can I save money on my wedding? Where should I cut? What is really important? Should I be paying this much for this service? These are all valid questions that any price conscious bride or groom may be asking themselves.

Getting married is not cheap, and there are things that we would normally never consider spending this type of money on. How often do you go out and buy a $1000 dress that you will wear only once? How often do you treat your friends to a dinner that will cost you $50-$100 per person? Never, but we do on our wedding day. We fork out thousands of dollars for one night for all of it to just go away afterward. The one thing that you can do for YOURSELF is to hire a phenomenal wedding videographer to recapture your special and expensive day. Superior wedding videography not only is something that you can treasure forever, but it’s one of the only true INVESTMENTS that you’ll make on your wedding day.
You actually get to keep it!

How should I invest my money in a wedding videographer?
Making sure to find the RIGHT videography company is the key.
Here are some great questions to ask:
• How long have they been in business?
• How many weddings have they actually shot and produced?
• Is it a full-time, insured, state registered business, or is this only a “side gig” or fly-by-night operation?
• How can they maintain their quality if you’re doing BOTH photography and videography?
• How much experience do their videographers have shooting weddings? Have the won awards?
• Do they have enough staff and equipment to cover in case something unforeseen was to happen?
• Do they have actual weddings that they can show me? How do the weddings look?
• Am I entertained watching a stranger’s wedding video?
• Do I feel like they would take excellent care of me and my fiancé on our wedding and even after?

Why should I pay more for this company’s work?
Just like most things in life, quality costs more. The reason is, to produce the highest quality workmanship you need the highest quality equipment and the most professional staff to make that happen. Isn’t it true, when you invest in the higher quality product, you are much more satisfied? Would you compare a real Coach purse to a knock-off Coach purse? No you wouldn’t. They’re both purses, they kind of look the same on the surface, but they are of completely different quality. They’re not made out of the same material, they’re not manufactured the same, therefore, they are not at all comparable. The same is true with wedding videography. A lower-quality, lower-priced company or a photography company who does “video on the side or as an add-on” can look similar on the surface, they may even have the same names for their packages, but when you dig down deeper, the differences are clear. Price shopping can be a very dangerous thing. Would you rather get a “good deal” and receive a video that you would NEVER want to watch or share with anyone? How was that a good deal? Or wouldn’t you rather pay a little more and get a video that you will want to watch again and again and show everyone you know?

In summary: Make sure that when you are looking to hire a videographer for your wedding that you are comparing apples to apples and not apples to lemons. A beautifully shot and edited wedding video can be the BEST INVESTMENT that you make for your wedding day. Do it for you!

Guys and Wedding Videos

- ”My fiancé thinks that wedding videos are just sappy and boring. He says that he’ll never watch it.”

I completely understand that most guys are pretty “hands-off” when it comes to most of the wedding planning. My husband was the same way when we were planning our wedding. “Whatever you want” was the typical response I got from him, as most of us women do. The one trend that I have notice over the past few years is that guys are really becoming more and more interested with helping out with the video aspect of the planning. Whether it’s the MTV star or tech-geek buried deep within them that get them excited… who knows; all I can tell you is that guys are really getting into it. Someone just needs to inform them that they can be involved in the excitement and just how much fun it’s going to be for THEM!
Now, there are a few conditions that go along with this statement. You must find a professional videography company who will involve your man as much as they involve you & work within his comfort levels. As women we feel as if it’s OUR day to shine, but the reality is that it’s our groom’s day too. Just like us women, our men love to see themselves on camera having a great time even though we all pretend as if we don’t. Who wouldn’t want to remember the happiest and most exciting day of their adult life? They’ll also come to appreciate the sentimental moments that are captured with their family and friends as time goes on. I can’t tell you how many of our grooms have been so happy that they’ve chosen to have their wedding professionally videotaped and have thanked their wives for “forcing” them into it.
At Mystic Image, we specialize not only in making our brides look phenomenal, but our grooms too. We were the first company in NE Ohio to offer a “Groom’s Morning Segment”. Because we are able to set up scenarios with our grooms, we’re able to let them personally get involved and really play it up. Whatever they’re up for, we will try to make their vision happen. They can choose from a James Bond theme to something very fly on the wall* and anything in between. (Please see samples below) We can satisfy his inner rock star!

I guess what I’m trying to explain is that if you want something that you’re fiancé will really enjoy and appreciate for years to come, let him know that there are possibilities out there. Show him these clips and let him create something fun and exciting that he would be proud to show everyone he knows. And best of all… you would be RIGHT! 

Our “White Glove” Service

- “What makes you different from other videographers?”
What sets Mystic Image Video apart from all of the other videography companies out there is our signature White Glove Service. We offer the largest selection of video related items. Everything from Video Love Stories to Extreme Wedding Day Edits. We are also the experts in Blu-ray Disc technology. Many other companies will tell you that they offer Blu-ray, but how many of them have actually produced a Blu-ray Disc? Can they show you multiple examples? We are the only company in NE Ohio that has been producing Blu-ray DVDs for over three years. There are no hidden fees or unexpected charges. Our prices include fully edited videos produced on the highest quality DVDs available to professional videographers, additional copies for parents and unparalleled customer service.

When you big day finally arrives, we will try our hardest to make sure that you and your fiancé are comfortable and happy. We don’t mind going the extra mile for our brides and grooms. We work like ninjas (unobtrusive yet everywhere). You won’t believe all of the amazing shots we’ll get without you even knowing it. We also make sure to work within everyone’s comfort levels. We not paid to make anyone look silly or to make them feel uncomfortable. We invite your family members and bridal party to send you “well wishes” on your video in a location where they can feel free to express their personal messages in a comfortable atmosphere. We NEVER go table-to-table and we never force anyone to be on camera who doesn’t want to be.

Finally, we make sure that each of our videos are customized with a personalized touch that makes your video truly your own. No cookie-cutter wedding videos here! You wouldn’t want your wedding video to look like someone just cut and paste your head on someone else’s body would you? We are extremely particular about getting it PERFECT. We want you to laugh until you cry and cry until you laugh. How many other video companies out there can tell you that “you are going to LOVE your wedding video”? There will never be any surprises or last-minute charges when you pick up your video. We do have to charge for additional DVD copies beyond what is include in your package, however the cost is minimal. Our goal is not to keep you paying but to keep you happy.

The Mystic Image White Glove Service is more than you expect but nothing less than you deserve.

This is our promise to you.
